DSL internet provider

A DSL Internet provider is similar to cable and some people refer to DSL as cable or broadband. What is a DSL provider? Easy DSL stands for Digital Subscriber line. DSL will give you a faster connection speed, faster surfing, and is very convenient and easy to use.

With a DSL internet provider your telephone line will be used for both your internet connection and for your telephone. You will be able though to sue both at the same time. You can be surfing on the internet and talking with your best friend at the same exact time.

How does a DSL internet provider work?
Let’s first look at how dial-up works. Both of these services DSL and dial-up uses your telephone line. When you make a telephone call your voice is carried over this telephone cable to the central office where it will be switched over to the person you are calling. With dial-up internet connection, the signal will be sent to the central office and then switched over to the internet company. Then it will have to go through a modem bank to connect you to the internet. Okay, DSL is different, because it is always connected. You will be using a DSL modem that you attach to your computer. This eliminates the use of going through the telephone company to be connected to the internet. There will be no need for that switching process. This will ensure you have a faster connection to the internet and you will always be connected as soon as you turn on your computer.

Finding a DSL internet provider can be trying as it is not available in all locations and prices can vary with each company and the services that they offer. Just because DSL is provided by a telephone company does not necessarily mean that your telephone company offers a DSL internet connection. Each company that wishes to offer DSL will have to install DSLAM’s in all of their central offices and may also require other rather expensive upgrades for the service to work properly. Because of the large expense DSL is usually not offered in rural communities.

Do all telephone companies offer the service?
No. Providing DSL services likely involves additional investment by the phone company. To upgrade to DSL the incumbent phone company or a competitive local exchange carrier will need to install DSLAMs in all central offices where they plan to offer the service. In addition, the outside plant may require expensive upgrades for the service to work properly. As a result, the incumbent phone company or a competitive local exchange carrier may offer DSL, but not necessarily in all service locations. And, not surprisingly, DSL is often not offered in the most rural areas. If you can get enough of your neighbors together that want a DSL internet provider, you may be able to talk with your telephone company and if they can make a profit, you may be surprised that they will offer the service. It will not be a quick process and all the extra equipment will take awhile to prepare. If you have talked with your telephone company and they will not answer your questions regarding whether or not they are going to offer DSL you can contact your public service commission, they should be able to find out the answers to your questions. Just remember, the more people in your area that you can get to ask for DSL, the better your chances are of getting this service available in your area.
