Free internet provider

The two largest names in free internet provider were NetZero and Juno. NetZero began in July of 1997 and launched their free internet service in October of 1998. Juno was founded in May 1995 and began their free internet service in December 1999. Both of these unique companies were awesome for people who had never been online before. Having free access to the internet gave thousands of people the freedom to surf and gain knowledge without having to pay for surfing. They had some wonderful plans that allowed you unlimited time on the internet, but all of that is now in the past.

Finding a free internet provider has become a very hard thing to do. Juno and NetZero both merged into one company called United Online; their free internet service is now no more that 10 hours a month per household. Hardly time to even check your email and respond to your letters, let alone time for you children to do research for a school project. Gaining free internet access at home is pretty much a thing of the past.

You can find some restaurants, libraries, and even internet cafes with free internet access. Many of the internet cafes have wireless connections where you can use your own laptop and not pay for their connection as long as you are drinking coffee or partaking of a meal.

If you are fortunate enough to be an American Express card owner then you are one of the lucky ones that can still find a free internet provider. You may notice an ad everyone in awhile, but for free internet access that should not be a major problem. They also offer one mail account that can be accessed through Outlook Express or a webmail interface, a 5MB website that you can upload through FTP. There connection is pretty fast and they do not mind if you have more than modem connected. All users will have to have Internet Explorer 5.5.

BlueLight was another great beginning for a free internet provider, but they had many problems and now this company that began with Kmart and Yahoo is also owned by NetZero. So, you know how much free internet you can get, 10 hours per month per household.

Access4free claims to be a free internet provider, but once again they only allow 10 hours per month and each additional hour will cost $1.00, but never over $10.00 per month. This may not be free but $10 per month for unlimited access may not be a bad deal. In which case you may be better off going with a proven name brand like NetZero. NetZero also do not have any of those annoying ads that some services stick you with even with cheap internet access. They do not have anything for you to install on your computer except for the dial-up software, so it is pretty easy to stop service any time you wish.

If you are brave enough and don’t mind your computer being used when you are not using it, there is a company that is a free internet provider. They charge a one time set up fee of $8.99 and do run test with their software that measures websites who have registered with their service. Anytime you begin to surf, download or use your internet access in any fashion, the software automatically starts giving you your full bandwidth.

So, now you know your options for finding a free internet provider. Good luck hunting and enjoy surfing whether free or not.
